Cooking Foundations
13-14 week program consisting of 13-14 sessions, held once weekly from 4:30-6pm.
What this program about:
Cooking & Conversation-Foundations is a fun, hands-on group designed to help children build early independence and confidence in the kitchen while developing social skills with peers. Through simple, structured cooking activities, learners develop foundational kitchen skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Using visual supports and guided instruction, learners prepare snacks and simple meals. They are introduced to hot food preparation with close supervision. The group will engage in interactive group activities that promote teamwork, communication, and independence.
Who is it for?
This group is designed for school-aged learners ( ages 8 – 14) who are beginning to explore cooking skills for the first time. Learners are able to follow instructions in a group and demonstrate understanding and application of basic safety skills in a group setting. Groups will pair learners of similar ages and goals.
What will your child learn?
Learners will build practical life skills and social communication through engaging cooking experiences, including:
· Kitchen Safety- Learning how to stay safe in the kitchen and use materials properly.
· Following Recipes- Using simple, step-by-step (often visual) recipes to make snacks and meals.
· Using Kitchen Tools- Practicing how to safely use child-friendly tools like safety knives and utensils.
· Finding Ingredients- Learning how to find and organize items from the fridge and pantry.
· Food Preparation Skills- Building skills like washing, mixing, spreading, and putting together simple foods.
· Building Independence- Gaining confidence in completing tasks more independently over time.
· Working with Others- Practicing teamwork, sharing responsibilities, and working together during activities.
· Social Skills- Encouraging communication, asking for help, and interacting with peers in a natural way.
· Participation and Confidence- Following group routines, staying engaged, and feeling proud of what they create.
